A  Dismal History of US treatment of Black Americans

A Look at African-American History, Through the Numbers

In recognition of Black History Month, here are a few facts and figures about the African-American experience in the U.S.

By Jo Craven McGinty

The Wall Street Journal Feb. 16-17, 2019

Four hundred years ago, the first Africans arrived in what is now the U.S.

In recognition of that anniversary and of Black History Month, here are a few numbers that help describe their experience and that of their descendants.

More than 10 million Africans were forcibly transported to the New World in 36,000 voyages between the 16th and 19th centuries, but only around 400,000 ended up in what became the U.S., according to slavevoyages.org.

“A vast majority of slaves didn’t come to the U.S.,” said Paul Finkelman, editor of the Encyclopedia of African American History and president of Gratz College in Melrose Park, Pa.

“They went to Brazil and the Caribbean. That’s something people don’t expect.”

Almost all of the Africans who were enslaved in the U.S. arrived before the American Revolution, Dr. Finkelman said, and thousands fought in the War for Independence.

Scholars’ estimates vary dramatically, but the National Museum of African American History and Culture uses these figures: Around 20,000 free or enslaved black colonials sided with the British, while more than 5,000 fought with the colonial revolutionaries.

  • “Blacks were leaving the plantation to join the British because the British promised freedom,” said Malik Russell, communications director of the NAACP.

In 1986, then-President Ronald Reagan signed the Black Revolutionary War Patriots Act authorizing a memorial to be built in Washington, D.C., in their honor. The National Liberty Memorial, as it is known, has yet to be built.

When the Revolutionary War began, slavery was legal in every one of the 13 colonies, Dr. Finkelman said, and remained legal in all 13 states as the new country was born.

However, the percentage of African-Americans living in each one differed. In places like New Hampshire and Massachusetts, the population was 1% or 2% black. In states like Virginia and South Carolina, the population ranged from 40% to more than 50%.

For about 20 years following the American Revolution, virtually no Africans came to the U.S. But starting in 1803, over a five-year period South Carolina and Georgia brought in about 60,000 new slaves from Africa, Dr. Finkelman said, anticipating that Congress would soon end the slave trade—and it did.

The Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves went into effect on Jan. 1, 1808, the earliest date permitted by the Constitution—although some slaves continued to be smuggled in.

Between the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and the ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865, about 4 million slaves were freed.

“This was the largest transfer of wealth in the history of the U.S.,” Dr. Finkelman said. “This is $2 billion in 1860 dollars in terms of property.”

In comparison, the value of slave labor, by one scholar’s estimate, would have exceeded $87 billion at that time. Thomas Craemer, a professor of public policy at the University of Connecticut, estimated the value using free labor market wages of the day, with 3% interest, assuming 12 hours of daily labor on the part of the slaves from 1776 through 1860.

More than 200,000 African-Americans had fought in the Civil War, according to the Museum of African American History and Culture. Ironically, when it ended, the power of the defeated states increased.

Closing the Gap: Black representation in Congress is coming closer to mirroring U.S. demographics.

Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, CongressionalBiographical Directory, U.S. House History

Because of the Three-Fifths Compromise of 1787, only three of every five slaves had been counted for apportionment of representatives to the U.S. House, but after they were freed, all were counted.

“Former Confederate states had more representatives in Congress than they had before the Civil War,” Dr. Finkelman said, “but they didn’t let blacks vote, so southern whites had even more political power, not less.”

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 altered the political landscape, but change occurred slowly. In 132 years, from 1881 until 2013, previous slaveholding states elected no blacks to the U.S. Senate, and in 68 years, from 1901 until 1969, they elected no blacks to the U.S. House of Representatives.

During the Great Migration, millions of African-Americans left the South in search of work and to escape segregation and violence. Between 1880 and 1922, an African-American was lynched more than once a week, according to Dr. Finkelman, and by 1968, there had been about 4,800 lynchings, mostly of African-Americans.

The Justice for Victims of Lynching Act of 2018—the latest of more than 200 anti-lynching bills introduced in Congress—was passed by the Senate in December, but it isn’t yet law!

“It didn’t make its way through the House,” Mr. Russell said, noting that eradicating lynchings was a primary goal of the NAACP when it formed 110 years ago.

The largest number of African-Americans still live in former slave states, where allegations of voter suppression persist.

“People of African ancestry have been here since 1619,” Dr. Finkelman said. “They have had a tremendous impact on the country in a wide variety of ways, and despite their numbers and their many contributions, they have been denied political power, political access and economic access.”

In many ways, he said, it has been a dismal history.

Wall Bill A Disaster. Trump undermined completely

5 insane provisions in the amnesty omnibus bill

By Daniel Horowitz · February 14, 2019

Before getting into the details of this crazy omnibus bill, it’s important to recognize that we don’t understand all the details. The worst provisions are written in vague language ensconced in an 1,169-page bill, which has already been posted online in two different versions (the first was 10 pages shorter).

That is exactly why Democrats are salivating to vote on this within a few hours of passage, which is exactly why Trump has a responsibility to oppose it immediately and demand at least a short-term clean continuing resolution so that he can digest the consequences of this bill. If he cannot make that simple demand, which would not even trigger a phony shutdown, then his presidency is worthless.

The process is indefensible: It is immoral, from any ideological perspective, to vote on an 1,169-page omnibus with new provisions on immigration amid a border crisis. We are already four and a half months into this fiscal year and have been operating on stopgap bills.

There is no rush to vote on something like this, which will fund seven departments for the remainder of the year, within a few hours when we should have another stopgap bill while we debate, and even discover, the contents of this long-term bill that makes important statutory changes. The only reason one would pursue this process is to hide things from the American people.

Here are the immediate issues to flag:

  1. Less of a wall than even what Democrats already agreed to: Trump originally demanded $25 billion for the wall. Then he negotiated himself down to $5.6 billion. Democrats balked and only agreed to $1.6 billion. This bill calls it a day at $1.375 billion, enough to construct 55 miles. But it’s worse than that.
  2. This bill limits the president’s ability to construct “barriers” to just the Rio Grande Valley sector and only bollard fencing, not concrete walls of any kind. There’s no ability to adapt. Furthermore, section 231 prohibits construction even within the RGV in five locations that are either federal or state lands.
  3. Remember, the challenge with building a wall in Texas is that, unlike in other states, the feds need to navigate issues with private lands. The first place you’d construct fencing is on public lands, which are now prohibited. The national parks along the border have gotten so bad that park rangers are scared to travel alone in them.

Liberal local officials have veto power over wall: Actually, on second thought, it’s likely that not a single mile of fence will be built. Section 232(a) of this bill states that “prior to use of any funds made available by this Act for the construction of physical barriers” the Department of Homeland Security “shall confer and seek to reach mutual agreement regarding the design and alignment of physical barriers within that city.” With whom must the feds consult?

“The local elected officials.” Now you can understand the brilliance of limiting the wall to the Rio Grande Valley. These are the most liberal counties on the border (thanks to demographics of open borders itself!), and there is practically no local official who supports the wall in these counties.

What are the consequences? This bill stipulates that “Such consultations shall continue until September 30, 2019 (or until agreement is reached, if earlier) and may be extended beyond that date by agreement of the parties, and no funds made available in this Act shall be used for such construction while consultations are continuing.”

Thus, all the Beto O’Rourke type of politicians in that region have de facto veto power. There’s a reason why they didn’t authorize fencing in conservative counties like Cochise and Yuma in Arizona.

This bill contains a blatant amnesty for the worst cartel smugglers: Section 224(a) prohibits the deportation of anyone who is sponsoring an “unaccompanied” minor illegal alien – or who says they might sponsor a UAC, or lives in a household with a UAC, or a household that potentially might sponsor a UAC.

It’s truly difficult to understate the betrayal behind this provision. One of the driving factors of the invasion is the misinterpretation of the UAC law. Under current law, Central American teenagers are only treated as refugees if they are A) a victim of “A severe form of trafficking” and B) have no relatives in the country.

Yet almost all of them are self-trafficked by these very illegal relatives who are indeed present in the country. Rather than clamping down on this fleecing of the American people, the bill gives amnesty to the very people paying the cartels to invade us!

“We can call this the MS-13 Household Protection Act of 2019,” said Jessica Vaughan of the Center for Immigration Studies. “We know that 80 percent of the UAC sponsors are in the country illegally. The number of people this would protect would reach into the hundreds of thousands, if all of the household or potential household members are counted.

ICE has estimated that 30-40 percent of the MS-13 members it has arrested in the last two years arrived as UACs. There is no reason to shield any of these individuals from deportation. After all, if the minor is living with family, they should no longer be considered unaccompanied anyway. If there are illegal aliens here who do not yet have a child here to serve as a deportation shield, this certainly is an incentive for them to make the arrangements to bring one.”

More funding to manage and induce the invasion rather than to deter it: While offering no new funding for ICE deportation agents or immigration judges to speed up asylum claims, as the president requested, this bill adds another $40 million for the Alternatives to Detention (ATD) program, which moves asylum seekers to facilities in the interior of the country, where they are usually released.

Vaughan, who has studied interior immigration enforcement for decades, warned that “this bill will further expand and institutionalize the catch-and-release policies for those arriving illegally at the border from all over the world.”

What are the effects of the ATD program? “Most of these people have no intention of asking for asylum and know they don’t qualify for it, but are simply joining the illegal population, knowing it’s unlikely that they will be deported.

The bill funds ‘case management’ staff to keep tabs on those who don’t abscond immediately, but no money for ICE officers to find and remove them. This is going to saddle the communities that have been forced to absorb these new arrivals with billions of dollars of future costs for schooling, health care, and other welfare services.”

At the same time, this bill reduces border detention beds from 49,060 to 40,520 rather than expanding them as Trump demanded. It contains no funding for more border agents. It offers $3.4 billion for refugee resettlement, more than last year’s record levels. Remember, much of the refugee program has been used not just for bringing in traditional refugees from overseas but to resettle the aforementioned Central American teenagers being self-trafficked through the border, empowering cartels, and taking advantage of us.

Doubling low-skilled workers: This bill (p. 1,161) doubles the number of H-2B non-agricultural, unskilled seasonal workers who will continue to be a public charge on America. This gives you a glimpse of what is driving this amnesty bill on the Republican side.

This is just a cursory glance through the bill. Taken together, these provisions will aggravate the criminal conspiracy of the cartels and continue the invasion. Just this week, 1,800 family units came in during one 24-hour period, a new record. The message of this bill is to come here and seek bogus asylum or to grab a kid and you and others will get amnesty. Plus, there are no wall or policy changes to mitigate these effects.

Moreover, this bill will likely override Trump’s executive powers because of the sneaky limitations on wall construction. This is the sort of omnibus bill that ensnared Reagan in Iran-Contra. Signing this bill will undermine his case for an emergency at the border both legally and politically.

If Trump signs this bill instead of vetoing it and firing the people in the White House promoting it, he deserves to lose re-election.

Ann Coulter – Nut Case embarrassment to her Christian heritage

Ann Coulter again..”If Jews Had Any Brains, They’d Be Christians    (Huh!)
Redacted from an excellent article by Gerald A. Honigman
(I am always amazed as to why anyone might think I would ever do that! I was already  “saved” simply by being born a Jew – one of G-d’s chosen people)   Jerome S. Kaufman

Ann Coulter was recently in the news again. This time it was for accusing Asians and Jews of wanting to be blacks https://www.newsweek.com/ann-coulter-twitter-tirade-ice-official-1322680.

Hey, don’t pick on Ann. She’s a truly loving soul.

In fact, she’s freely shared her very Christian love with many others over the years–including her late conservative Jewish actor friend, Ron Silver (a truly good guy), who brought her much joy by eating the host of the Christian communion at Sunday services with her.

I heard that selfless Ann tried real hard to save Ron’s soul from eternal damnation by encouraging his conversion to Christianity on his deathbed from cancer about a decade ago. As a Jew (or Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Sikh,  etc.), Ron could not get through the Pearly Gates in official Christian beliefs (“no gettin’ to the Father except through the Son,” etc.). I don’t know what Ron’s final decision was, but you can’t say that Saint Ann didn’t try https://www.wnd.com/2009/03/92155/.

This latest Coulterian episode brought back memories. Back in October 2007, for example, she appeared on Donny Deutsch’s CNBC television program, The Big Idea https://www.thedailybeast.com/trump-supporter-ann-coulter-slams-pandering-to-f-ing-jews.

In the midst of discussing her own then new book, If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans, she lectured her Jewish host that Jews needed to be “perfected”…you know, like she and her fellow Christians are.

Those same perfected folks who murdered and humiliated countless millions of G_d’s children over the millennia for not accepting Christianity’s version of Divine truth.

Guess what? Islam spread the same way--especially when encountering those non-Peoples of the Book in points east on the Indian subcontinent and elsewhere.. Keep in mind as well that when the Coulters now get a taste of their own previous medicine, courtesy of jihadi Islamofascists, they throw a supreme hissy fit (not that it really makes a difference who’s dishing out intolerance in G_d’s name).

I mean, after all, why can’t Jews just see all the good Christian “love” brought them over the ages… forced conversions, inquisitions, ghettos, crusades, expulsions, blood libels, autos-da-fe, subjugation, pogroms, humiliation, countless massacres, the Holocaust…

Churches in Europe still have statues and pictures commemorating such things as Jews stabbing the host of the Eucharist to “kill Jesus” yet again (that same host Ann encouraged her pal Ron Silver to eat); a fallen, stubborn Jewish princess with blinders over her eyes; Jews kidnapping Christian children to use their blood for religious purposes (have you ever read about Little Hugh of Lincoln in Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales?);

Jews poisoning wells to cause plague; and so forth. Indeed, the first picture of a Jew in England is entitled, “Aaron, son of the Devil.” And even the enlightened Michelangelo’s sculpture of Moses has what most viewers will see as Devil’s horns coming from his head…regardless of some “rays of light” explanations.

The cold, hard fact is that the road to Auschwitz was paved for centuries with Coulter’s Christian “love.”

Many Jews know Christian theology very well. I certainly do… But do Christians like Coulter ever ask themselves why Jews are “stubborn” and “blind” to their attempts to cram their “love” up Semitic derrieres?

Perhaps a well-known ancient Roman historian can explain it for them.

You see, when Rome persecuted Christians, it was largely because the only thing they knew about the latter was that their leader was crucified as just another of many potential Jewish patriots and possible Messianic deliverers against Roman oppression.

Christians were just one sect of Jews by another name…those same people who took on the mighty Roman Empire for over a century for their freedom and independence. Visit or see a picture of the Arch of Titus, standing tall in Rome to this very day, to see how Rome felt about its victory over the Jews.  Or see a Roman Judaea Capta coin of conquest issued after the first major revolt from 66-73 C.E. There’s one on the front cover of my book http://q4j-middle-east.com.

You see, while other ancient peoples deified their great leaders, Jews bent over backwards to show the gulf between man and G_d…the ethical G_d of history whom, by the way, they introduced to the world. Coulter would still be practicing fertility rights, child sacrifice, and such if not for this “blind people’s” faith.

Furthermore, for a number of reasons (not the least being a large resurgence of anti-Semitism throughout the world), Christians who claim to be the Jews’ friends need to be the forces and voices confronting the Ann Coulters and their Replacement Theology clerical mentors…not their still vulnerable, minority Jewish brothers and sisters.

What the Press War on Trump Reveals

By Monica Crowley

Washington Times,  January 28, 2019

What does a president have to do to get a fair shake from the press?

No Republican president is going to get consistently even-handed coverage from a press corps more interested in protecting an opposing agenda and maintaining approval from their peers.

www.israel-commentary.org

But if you’re Donald Trump, you’re a target of a different kind. Mr. Trump’s populist approach represents an existential threat to everyone, press included, with a vested interest in the corrupt status quo.

If he succeeds, it’s curtains for them, and they know it. Therefore he must be destroyed at all costs, even if that means ripping apart the U.S. Constitution, the truth, the rule of law, the social fabric and basic human decency.

Two years into his presidency, the forces arrayed against him are growing more dishonest and panicky. As the original plan to undermine him and ruin his presidency — the Russian collusion fairy tale — unravels, they are flailing for something else with which to destroy him.

In the meantime, the media refuse to grant him an honest accounting of his remarkable achievements at the midway point of his first term. Former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama often received glowing reviews and/or protective coverage — even when, perhaps especially when, bad things befell their presidencies.

But Mr. Trump doesn’t even receive crumbs. In fact, a recent study by the Media Research Center found that 90 percent of network television coverage of Mr. Trump and his administration is negative.

It’s true that Mr. Trump often steps on his own good news with an ill-timed tweet or blow-up over some small matter. But the media’s anti-Trump posture appears to be all-consuming, even at the risk of imploding their own credibility, as the latest BuzzFeed fake news debacle illustrates. If a story hits Mr. Trump, it’s often considered too good to check. Print or broadcast now, ask questions later.

While the gatekeepers aren’t looking, however, Mr. Trump is delivering what he promised: A far stronger country.  (His totally amazing list of mind-boggling achievements in just a two year period:)

Thanks to his pro-growth policies, a thriving economy is underway. Real gross domestic product (GDP) growth exceeded 3 percent over the last four quarters.

More than 5 million jobs have been created since 2016, and the unemployment rate remains below 4 percent. This historically low unemployment has particularly benefited blacks, Latinos and women, and poverty rates among those groups have also fallen to record lows.

Wages are up in recent months, with workers enjoying their largest nominal year over year wage growth in nearly a decade.

Mr. Trump is also fulfilling his promise to bring back American manufacturing. The National Association of Manufacturers’ Outlook Index had the highest annual average in its history over the past year. Manufacturing added a staggering 284,000 jobs in 2018, the most added in a year since 1997.

He’s also made extraordinary strides on trade, negotiating a new agreement between the U.S., Canada and Mexico to replace the counterproductive North American Free Trade Agreement, renegotiating the U.S.Korea Free Trade Agreement to preserve and grow jobs in the auto industry and increase American exports, launching new trade talks with Japan and the European Union, and through an unwavering application of tariffs, bringing China to the table.

Mr. Trump has also unleashed the United States’ vast energy resources, approving pipelines and fracking, and leading the United States to become a net natural gas exporter for the first time in 60 years.

He continues to chip away at the regulatory burden of Obamacare while introducing market and patient-based reforms to expand access to quality, affordable health care.

He’s remaking the federal judiciary with constitutional conservatives, and he’s secured confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court of two justices.

From the start, he’s taken a firm stand on enforcing the border, existing immigration laws and the rule of law, including staring down Democrats in a lengthy government shutdown over border security.

He’s rebuilding a military left hollowed-out by years of budget cuts, begun reform of the Veteran’s Administration, decimated ISIS’ territorial caliphate, exited the disastrous Iran nuclear deal, moved the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem (inspiring other nations to follow suit), began denuclearization talks with North Korea and secured the return of American hostages and the remains of U.S. soldiers from Pyongyang.

And he’s done it all gratis, having donated his presidential salary each quarter he’s been in office. A thankless job is even more thankless when not drawing a salary.

Any president with this level of success would be getting at least a few plaudits from the press. But Mr. Trump isn’t “any president.” He is a direct threat against the entrenched interests of the swamp. For the elite media mavens, he therefore deserves little to no coverage that might cast him in a positive light — even if that coverage is honest and fair.

The press is often aghast at Mr. Trump’s righteous indignation directed their way. But perhaps what worries them most is that by exposing them, he will render them largely irrelevant.

Why do the Europeans still support Iran? – Just follow the money

Why do the Europeans still support Iran: It’s the money, stupid.

BY FLAME

February 5, 2019

So threatened are members of the European Union by the U.S. exit from the Iran Nuclear Deal—and the re-imposition of harsh U.S. sanctions on the Islamic Republic—that last week Germany, France and Britain announced a new work-around: The Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX).

INSTEX is essentially a primitive barter system—enabling companies and countries to enter into trades of European goods for Iranian goods—thus bypassing the U.S.-dollar-dominated international banking system and avoiding U.S. sanctions on those who do business with Iran.

However, the objective of INSTEX is not to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons—the Iran Deal already ensures a smooth runway to such WMDs. Rather, the Europeans are threatened by the loss of newly booming trade with Iran that U.S. sanctions promise to shut down.

In other words, the E.U. is not concerned about the safety of the world’s people—and regarding the safety of Israel, which Iran bellicosely vows to destroy on a daily basis, forget about it.

Bill Clinton once famously analyzed the key issue in his presidential election with his pithy, “It’s the economy, stupid.” For the E.U., it’s the money, stupid.

While concern about trade with Iran is clearly in the E.U.’s—and Iran’s—rational self-interest, we should allow no mistake: Under the current Iran Deal, the Islamic Republic will acquire murderous nuclear weapons, it will continue to develop ballistic missiles that can carry those weapons to Europe (and Israel), and it will continue to pursue a global imperialist strategy via Islamist terrorism.

As if that weren’t enough, Iran was just months ago caught red-handed by European intelligence as it engineered terror plots and plans to assassinate Iranian opposition leaders on European soil.

While the E.U. made small noises of protest to these violations of its sovereignty, the transgressions were not enough to dampen the allure of billions in new trade.

Indeed, trade opened up by the Iran Deal (formally called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA) has been substantial. Remember that the E.U., before JCPOA relieved sanctions, was Iran’s largest trading partner.

For France, in 2017 alone, JCPOA relief has meant a deal to develop an Iranian gas field worth $4.8 billion, and an Airbus agreement to build 100 aircraft for Iran to the tune of $18 billion.

Germany, once Iran’s largest trade partner, has rebuilt trade with Teheran from $2 billion in 2013 to $3.5 billion in 2017—and it continues to grow. Austria’s trade with Iran grew 34% in 2017. Italy’s trade during 2016-2017 grew 117%.

In 2016-2017, E.U. exports to Iran grew by 31.5%, and imports grew 83.9%—and the E.U. is now Iran’s third largest trading partner, exceeded only by China and the United Arab Emirates. The E.U. is no doubt aiming to return to its number-one position.

No wonder that ever since President Trump announced his decision to leave the Iran Deal and reintroduce sanctions, the Europeans have been genuflecting to Ayatollah Khamenei, trying desperately to salvage their burgeoning billions in trade with the Iranian outlaws.

While President Trump campaigned on promoting U.S. interests above those of all other nations—and he encourages other countries to act with similar self-interest—in this notable case Trump is not pursuing financial gain for the U.S., but rather U.S. and global security (including that of Israel). Obviously, the Europeans have baser motivations.

Yet clearly, the European strategy is already backfiring. U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo has made clear that companies seeking to bypass U.S. sanctions by trading with Iran in any form will be held accountable. Iran has also recently been implicated in assassination and terror plots in Denmark, Albania, Austria, Belgium and France—even as the Europeans implement desperate machinations to help Teheran and themselves financially.

As the adult in the room, the U.S. should hold fast to its decision to harshly punish Iran and all those who would aid the Islamic Republic (even as they fill their own pockets).

But even more, E.U. members should heed Pompeo’s October 2018 exhortation: “We are asking every nation who is sick and tired of the Islamic Republic’s destructive behavior to join our pressure campaign. This especially goes for our allies in the Middle East and Europe, people who have themselves been terrorized by the violent regime’s activity for decades.”

For pro-Israel activists, our position is clear: We should support all U.S. efforts to block Iran’s deadly global aggression, including, especially, its efforts to develop nuclear weapons. This includes measures to persuade E.U. members to shift their priorities from short-term business deals to long-term global security.

Please forward this FLAME Hotline to your friends, family and fellow congregants, so they, too, can help us tell the true story of Iran’s evil intent and the E.U.’s complicity.

I hope you’ll also quickly visit FLAME’s lively new Facebook page and review the P.S. immediately below, which describes FLAME’s recent hasbarah campaign asserting the need for Israel to maintain its sovereignty over the strategically critical Golan Heights on the border of Syria.

Please pardon my ethnic pride. But hey, he is the only football player we ever had that won the MVP!

Patriots’ Julian Edelman becomes first-ever Jewish player to win Super Bowl MVP

Edelman has 10 receptions for 141 yards as he helps New England Patriots win a low-scoring final in Atlanta after he was forced to sit out last year’s game with an injury

New England Patriots’ Julian Edelman (11) holds the Vince Lombardi Trophy after the NFL Super Bowl 53 football game against the Los Angeles Rams, Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019, in Atlanta. The Patriots won 13-3. Edelman was named the Most Valuable Player.

ATLANTA  — The Patriots’ Julian Edelman was selected as the Super Bowl MVP while helping lift the Patriots to a 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday night, apparently becoming the first-ever Jewish player to win the honor.

Edelman was forced to watch only as a spectator a year ago as his disappointed Patriots teammates trudged off the field as Super Bowl losers.

Catch after catch in this one, Tom Brady’s favorite wide receiver helped make them winners again as Edelman had 10 receptions for 141 yards.

The two met at midfield with confetti flying, and embraced for several moments — eyes filled with the tears of champions.

“I’m pretty ecstatic,” Edelman said. “I’m emotionally pooped. I’m physically and emotionally pooped.”

Edelman, one of only a few Jewish players in the league, is certainly the most successful, through his role as Brady’s favorite target. The Brady-to-Edelman connection has been a major part of the Patriots’ dominance in recent years, and the pair have now won three Super Bowls together.

Edelman, 32, also is the most outwardly Jewish NFL player, embracing that side of his identity over time. He has a Jewish father but was not raised in the religion, and through the Patriots front office often would defer on questions about his religion.

Congratulations to @Patriots and the Jewish people’s Mega-mensch owner, Robert Kraft for winning his 6th Super Bowl trophy and to Julian Edelman, a gridiron Maccabee, for winning the MVP trophy.

He didn’t establish himself as a standout until the 2013 season. Coincidentally or not, it was during his breakout year that Edelman identified as Jewish in an interview with the NFL Network.

Since then, he has shown his Jewish pride on a number of occasions. In a 2014 game, for instance, he wore a pin featuring the Israeli flag. He has tweeted about Jewish holidays. He even went on a Birthright-style trip to Israel, and has written a children’s book that references modern-day Zionism founder Theodor Herzl. After the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting in the fall that killed 11, he wore special cleats with Hebrew on them to honor the victims.

In a congratulatory tweet, Israel’s Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer hailed Edelman as a “gridiron Maccabee,” a reference to the Jewish warriors from the Hanukkah story.

It was an incredibly satisfying ending to a big-time comeback season for Edelman, a guy considered by Brady to be like a little brother — some teammates even jokingly say they have a “bromance” — and widely regarded as one of the greatest slot receivers in league history.

Even when things weren’t working early for the Patriots, Edelman kept the offense going and the clock rolling as a safety valve for Brady. He also had a 13-yard grab during the go-ahead touchdown drive with 7 minutes left in the game.

What he did in this Super Bowl was exactly what the Patriots’ offense was missing in last year’s 41-33 loss to Philadelphia.

Edelman finished the regular season with 74 catches and a team-high 850 receiving yards with six touchdowns. He kept it going through New England’s first two playoffs games, hauling in 16 catches for a team-high 247 yards.

Tom Brady had won four of the MVP awards in the Patriots’ previous five Super Bowl victories.

It seemed only fitting that Edelman walked off the field with this one.

The Benefits of A Month of Multiculturalism in Britain: January 2019 by Soeren Kern

More than 5,000 people signed a petition to boycott Marks and Spencer toilet paper: they alleged it was embossed with the Arabic word for God. Marks and Spencer, in a statement on Twitter, denied the claims: “The motif on the aloe vera toilet tissue, which we have been selling for over five years, is categorically of an aloe vera leaf and we have investigated and confirmed this with our suppliers.”

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe urged Britain to make it a legal requirement for Muslim couples to register their marriages civilly before or at the same time as their religious ceremony, because Sharia marriages alone “clearly discriminate against women in divorce and inheritance cases.”

The Guardian reported that hundreds, and possibly thousands, of young girls in Britain are being subjected to so-called breast-ironing, an African practice whereby mothers or grandmothers use a hot stone to massage across the breast repeatedly in order to “break the tissue” and slow its growth. The objective is to stop unwanted male attention.

January 1. A 25-year-old Somali man stabbed three people — including a police officer — at Victoria Station in Manchester. BBC producer Sam Clack, who was waiting for a tram when the attack took place, reported: “The guy, his exact words were, he said: ‘As long as you keep bombing other countries, this sort of sh*t is going to keep happening.’

The suspect also screamed “Allahu Akbar!” (“Allah is the greatest!”) as he was bundled into a police van. Assistant Chief Constable Russ Jackson nevertheless said that officers were “retaining an open mind in relation to the motivation for this attack.” (Somehow, it must be our fault Right?)

The suspect was eventually detained under the Mental Health Act.

Origins of Judy Garland’s Over the Rainbow

(You would never have thunk)

By Janet Levy Ross  (who keeps coming up with pearls)

At the 2014 Oscars, they celebrated the 75th anniversary of the release of the “Wizard of Oz” by having Pink sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow.     But what few people realized, while listening to that incredible performer singing that unforgettable song, is that the music is deeply embedded in the Jewish experience.

But perhaps the most poignant song emerging out of the mass exodus from Europe was “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. The lyrics were written by Yip Harburg. He was the youngest of four children born to Russian Jewish immigrants. His real name was Isidore Hochberg and he grew up in a Yiddish speaking, Orthodox Jewish home in New York.

The music was written by Harold Arlen, a cantor’s son. His real name was Hyman Arluck and his parents were from Lithuania.

Together, Hochberg and Arluck wrote “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, which was voted the 20th century’s number one song by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

In writing it, the two men reached deep into their immigrant Jewish consciousness – framed by the pogroms of the past and the Holocaust about to happen – and wrote an unforgettable melody set to near prophetic words.

Read the lyrics in their Jewish context and suddenly the words are no longer about wizards and Oz, but about Jewish survival:

*********************

Somewhere over the rainbow
Way up high,
There’s a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue,
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.
Someday I’ll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That’s where you’ll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow
Bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow.
Why then, oh why can’t I?
If happy little bluebirds fly
Beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can’t I?

****************

The Jews of Europe could not fly. They could not escape beyond the rainbow. Harburg was almost prescient when he talked about wanting to fly like a bluebird away from the “chimney tops”. In the post-Auschwitz era, chimney tops have taken on a whole different meaning than the one they had at the beginning of 1939.

Pink’s mom is Judith Kugel. She’s Jewish of Lithuanian background. As Pink was belting the Harburg/Arlen song from the stage at the Academy Awards, I wasn’t thinking about the movie. I was thinking about Europe’s lost Jews and the immigrants to America.

I was then struck by the irony that for two thousand years the land that the Jews heard of “once in a lullaby” was not America, but Israel. The remarkable thing would be that less than ten years after “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was first published, the exile was over and the State of Israel was reborn.

Perhaps the “dreams that you dare to dream really do come true”(Please pass this on to someone who may not know the story.)
